CHAPTER 4
Scott hadnât meant to start this. He got up, unable to keep still a moment longer, but he had nowhere to go. Rain drummed on the roof and the wind lashed it against the windows. He couldnât even go out to the porch to get away from the tension.
âYou know Iâm not an expressive guy when it comes to feelings.â
âOh, I think you do okay at that. Just not with me.â
The flush of shame at having been caught laughingâand only laughingâwith another woman made no sense, but he felt it anyway. He was tired of apologizing for something he didnât do. âTell me weâre not going to talk about that stupid picture again.â
âThe only stupid thing about that picture was how stupid I felt when Dee texted it to me and asked if you and I had split up.â
âJesus, Emily. Iâm exhausted. I canât even make my own wife happy, so why the hell would I go looking for another woman to throw in the mix?â
âI donât know. Maybe for some other woman, youâd actually make an effort?â
He spun to face her, unable to grasp that they were really rehashing this same utterly ridiculous argument. But this was the first time sheâd accused him of not trying. âI work my ass off for this family, and you think Iâm not making an effort?â
âThatâs the problem, Scott. You think taking care of the family and being my husband are the same thing and theyâre not. Youâre an amazing provider and the absolute best father, but you and I are likeâ¦coworkers who live together. That picture showed the Scott I want, but I donât get anymore.â
The picture had been of some random people, probably meant to focus on the older woman holding a baby who was presumably her granddaughter, but Scott had been in the background, having lunch and laughing with a woman theyâd known for years. And somehow, through the mysterious connections of Facebook, the photo had ended up crossing paths with one of Emilyâs best friends.
It all went to shit from there.
âIâm not responsible for any conclusions random acquaintances jump to.â He looked up at the ceiling for a few seconds, as if heâd find the magic words to end this particular argument written up there before looking back at her. âI stopped in for some lunch. Liz was there and we had to talk about the music fundraiser for Dylan anyway. So we sat together because it would be ridiculous to yell our conversation to each other from separate tables. Whoever took the picture happened to catch me laughing, probably when we were talking about how bad the freshman clarinet player was.â
âSo youâve said.â
âAnd so Iâm going to keep on saying because itâs the damn truth.â
âWhy are you angry? Iâm the one who was hurt by it.â
âYou honestly donât think I have a reason to be pissed off about the fact weâre talking about this again? How about the fact Iâve never given you a reason not to
